A story-led private 4WD tour through backcountry viewpoints and lesser-known corners of the Whakatipu Basin — the landscape that the first people of this region travelled, traded, and called home long before Queenstown existed. Your local guide shares the history and stories behind every place you visit as you travel.
Best for: travellers who want genuine cultural insight and connection alongside the scenery — not just the view, but the story behind it.
What you can expect
- Backcountry Queenstown locations and viewpoints not on the standard tourist route
- Traditional Māori stories shared with care and respect at the places where they happened
- The history of Waitaha, Kāti Māmoe, and Ngāi Tahu — the tribes who travelled, traded pounamu (greenstone), and lived across this region
- A relaxed pace with time for questions and real conversation
Stories you’ll hear
- Aoraki — the ancestor figure at the heart of the Southern Alps
- Papatūānuku (Earth Mother) and Ranginui (Sky Father) — the creation story of the land and sky
- Hakitekura’s legendary swim across Lake Whakatipu
- Matakauri and the guardian water creature of the lake
- The Māori names of the places you visit and what they reveal
Stories are shared with care and respect. Your guide offers local insight into the people and history of this place — they do not speak on behalf of Ngāi Tahu (the local iwi of the region).
At a glance: Māori cultural heritage — traditional stories at real locations — scenic viewpoints — relaxed and flexible.

Ultimate Off Road Experience
A private 4-hour off-road adventure hosted by Off Road Adventures’ management team, combining a scenic guide-driven 4WD tour towards Skippers Canyon with a 1-hour buggy ride at our 650-acre Adventure Park, just 5 minutes from Queenstown.
PART 1: 4WD TOUR (3 hours)
Sit back in a Toyota V8 LandCruiser while our experienced team takes you towards the famous Skippers Canyon area. Expect dramatic canyon scenery, Queenstown and mountain viewpoints, Shotover River views, photo stops, historic Skippers Road sections, and gold-mining stories where they add to the experience.
PART 2: BUGGY RIDE (1 hour)
Finish with approximately 1 hour in Yamaha RMAX 1000cc buggies at our private Adventure Park. Choose the option that suits your group best.
- Option A – Guide-driven buggies: Recommended for the strongest overall experience. Your guide takes the wheel, picks the best lines, uses the terrain properly, and creates a more exciting, flowing off-road ride while you focus on the scenery, photos, videos, and experience. The ride can be adjusted to suit your group, from more thrilling to more scenic, or a balance of both.
- Option B – Self-drive buggies: If you prefer to drive, we begin with a short training session before heading out onto the property with your guide through a mix of climbs, corners, forest sections, open terrain, and viewpoints. Each buggy can have up to 2 drivers, with the option to switch part way through the ride. All self-drive drivers must be 18 years or older and hold a full driver’s licence.
For larger families or groups, we can arrange the right mix of vehicles, buggies, and staff so everyone can enjoy the experience together.
Approximately 3 hours of private 4WD touring plus approximately 1 hour of buggy time.
Guide-driven recommended. Self-drive available for visitors who want to drive.
Timing: Enquiry-only – arranged upon confirmation
Best for: Private groups, families, scenic touring, photos, and a premium off-road experience
Family Friendly: Suitable for ages 4+
